Time Crime was originally published in Astounding Science Fiction in 1955 as a two-part serial with illustrations by Kelly Freas. Many readers have long believed that this short novel was incomplete, due to its abrupt ending. John F. Carr, who has continued H. Beam Piper's Kalvan series, has written a new third part to this intriguing novel, adding vital information about the depths to which the Wizard Traders have infiltrated Home Time Line.

The Paratime Police are the guardians of the Paratime Secret and it is their ability to travel to alternate time-lines which have allowed the decadent First Level society to thrive as the ultimate parasites for over ten thousand years. The Paratimers, like any successful symbiots, must conduct their activities in complete secrecy without warning their hosts. It's up to the Paratime Police to make sure this code is enforced. Verkan Vall, Special Assistant to the Paratime Police Chief, faces a conspiracy that threatens to undermine the stability of Home Time Line civilization.

The Paratime Police uncover a First Level slave ring which is looting outtime worlds and harvesting slaves for debauched Home Time Liners. The Paratime Police quickly discover that this criminal organization, called the Wizard Traders, has its tentacles into every institution on Home Time Line.

Time Crime eBook John F Carr H Beam Piper

This is probably one of the best of H. Beam Piper's Paratime Series. With a short novella, 99 pages, you don't get the level of involvement that you would get with a novel, but, surprisingly, with Piper's Paratime stories, all short stories or similar length novellas, you actually get a great deal of action, adventure, and a glimpse into a parallel reality. With Piper's Paratime series I feel that this should have been a longer, more involved and more developed series of stories, perhaps even a series of novels. Then again, this was a story written for the media of the time, primarily periodicals, and many stories were serialized over several issues. As with so much of his other work, Piper's Paratime stories are crammed with action, plot twists, and thoughtful observations on politics, religion, social mores...etc. Piper was creative, inventive, willing to explore the impact of religion on politics, science on society, and so on. Yet he always seemed to deliver the sort of action packed adventure that so many have come to identify with science fiction. Piper's work, most of it from almost 60 years ago, holds up amazingly well. His views on socialism and fascism are certainly tinged with a 1950's view of the Red Peril of his day, yet, he never seems to lose sight of plot, characters, and above all; action. In spite of the political and social commentary woven into many of his tales, Piper never seems to lose the tempo of the action or the track of the plot. He never goes off on a tangent, and he never wastes words. I just wish he had written more.

Time Crime eBook John F Carr H Beam Piper Reviews

excellent read absolutely amazing how the story was written would like to read more stories like this one from the same author and others alike great vacation book not too short not too long just right thanks
His death by suicide was one of the worse things to ever happen to science fiction!
Piper is just enjoyable. He writes very well. If you enjoy this book, check out his "Fuzzy" series. they are all great!
Very good
This is an excellent combination of two H. Beam Piper original stories into a Gestalt with Carr's own work bridging and extending the two themes into a coherent even better novella is a great example of how to do this kind of work. Highly recommended to all fans of Piper or even those who just love classic 1960's sci-fi at its best.
This is an expanded version of Beam Piper's original.
The first two thirds are Beam Piper's original story.
This part of the book I give five stars.
The last third has been written after Beam Piper' death by Carr.
I rate it between one and two stars.
I enjoyed the whole Time Crime series, of which only the last had that title. The others, the loosely attached
He Walked Around the Horses;
Genesis;
Police Operation;
Last Enemy;
Temple Trouble; and finally, this volume
Time Crime

Each was better then the one before it, and I really wish there were several more.
